In a moment of crisis, care and compassion make all the difference. And through your support, our flight nurses can get the training they need to provide the trustworthy healthcare every Australian deserves, no matter the distance.
There are many moments on the job that stick with senior Flight Nurse Ruth. She provides care to patients during flights and makes sure the aircraft is fully equipped to run smoothly.
But it’s the moments of human connection with patients that she holds closest to her heart.
As Ruth says, “Some of the hardest moments are transporting patients home with a terminal diagnosis, which can be very emotional. But it’s also incredibly rewarding to help them return to their loved ones during such an important time.”
One man was travelling around Australia with his wife in their caravan when he became unwell, and deteriorated quickly, receiving a terminal diagnosis. His family were very keen for him to return home to receive end-of-life care, and the Flying Doctor were able to make that happen.
Ruth provided medical support during his flight from Townsville to regional Victoria. They were greeted by his family who were all so grateful to have him home. Sadly, he passed away a week later, but he was where he needed to be, surrounded by his loved ones.
As Ruth recalls,
“It had a big impact on me because it reminded me of the importance of helping patients get home and be with family during their final days.”
